Top 5 supplements for men- Wednesday, June 07, 2017

Keep your life on track and your healthful goals in reach with the top 5 supplements every man can benefit from.

Diet and nutrition play an important role in a man’s health. The right supplements can protect your heart, increase energy and focus, boost your immune system, and improve your sex life. With so many supplements available it can be tough figuring out what to take. Here we look at the top 5 supplements for men with proven benefits that you can feel.

Multivitamin: Multivitamins are the best way to ensure we are getting the nutrients that are hard to get from diet alone. One such nutrient that is vital for men is vitamin d. With almost half of the population being deficient it is important to supplement.1 Vitamin D3 helps optimize testosterone, bone health, and the immune system.2 For men, a good multivitamin goes beyond the basics to include herbs like saw palmetto for prostate health, antioxidants for the heart, and turmeric for inflammation.

Fish oil: We’ve all heard the beneficial fats known as omega-3s in fish oil are cardio protective and an essential brain fuel.3 Did you also know they are essential for hormone balance and cellular function? Omega-3s make our cells both more flexible and permeable so they can transport nutrients and hormones in and out as well get rid of waste. Keep your hormones optimized and your bodies running efficiently with fish oil.

CoQ10: Coenzyme Q10 is an essential nutrient that helps fuel every cell in the body. The highest concentration of CoQ10 is found in the heart which we see most of the benefits. CoQ10 can lower blood pressure and protect blood vessels from damage.4 CoQ10 has also been studied for its ability to improve sperm quality as well as its ability to help burn fat during exercise.

Ginseng: Ginseng has been used as a vitality enhancer for thousands of years. A Korean study showed that 60% of males who used ginseng reduced erectile dysfunction.5  Other proven benefits include lowering blood sugar, enhancing metabolism, reducing stress, and improving brain function. There are many forms of ginseng but the most researched for men would be Korean “red” ginseng.

Magnesium: Magnesium is the number one nutrient we aren’t getting through diet. With up to 68% of the population deficient supplementation is vital.6 Magnesium has over 600 metabolic functions ranging from energy production to muscle building. Magnesium has been shown to lower stress hormones, improve sleep, reduce inflammation, and protect the brain. In fact, in times of stress the body’s demand for magnesium dramatically increases. For men this is especially important because stress is one of the main reasons for inflammation, heart disease, and low testosterone.

Activated Charcoal Toothpaste- Friday, June 02, 2017

Black Magic: Activated charcoal, the blackest ingredient for the whitest smile.

Popular as a toothpaste in Japan for years, the unique properties of activated charcoal make it great at fighting plaque and removing stains. Activated charcoal (carbon) gets its name from the process of taking charcoal, which is created from the controlled charring of coconut or willow bark, and exposing it to high-pressure steam. This process makes the charcoal extremely porous and enhances its absorbing properties.

This “activated” carbon is 100% alkaline and highly negatively charged. These properties make charcoal great for absorbing impurities on the tooth as well as alkalizing the mouth, which fights plaque formation. Plaque is a biofilm that thrives in the warm and moist environment of the mouth. Plaque also creates an acidic environment that can dissolve tooth enamel and cause many oral complications. Activated charcoal disrupts this process helping prevent plaque buildup.

To use activated charcoal simply place any all natural toothpaste on your tooth brush and then dip it in some activated charcoal powder, add water and begin brushing. Your mouth will be black and your sink might look messy but do not worry! When you rinse your mouth, you will be treated to a brighter and healthier smile.

So the next time you are at the Shoppe picking out your favorite natural toothpaste add some activated charcoal and experience its unparalleled power to whiten teeth for yourself!

Sitting somewhere between plant and animal, mushrooms are some of the most unique organisms on the planet. Even among them, Lion’s Mane with its tooth like strands stands and lobster-like flavor stands out.

In Asia where it has been used for thousands of years, it said to bestow “nerves of steel and the memory of a lion”. Modern science seems to support these claims. Lion’s Mane is rich in over 70 bioactive compounds, the most studied of which are the erinacines. Erinacines promote NGF (nerve growth factor) in the body, which helps repair, grow, and protect nerves and neurons. Various conditions where healthier nerves may benefit include Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, and Neuropathy just to name a few.

5 Must-Haves for Every Mom - Wednesday, May 10, 2017

Not enough sleep. Shuttling kids back and forth to and from school and sports practice. Demands at work. These can all lead to stress for the busy mom. Here’s what you need to stay healthy and balanced.

By Bryan Bradford, Chief Nutrition Officer of Sunflower Shoppe Natural Foods

1) Multivitamin. No matter how healthful and “clean” you eat, a quality multivitamin is critical to the foundation of good health. It makes up for the shortfall of nutrients that you may not be getting through your diet.

2) Omega oils. (aka essential fatty acids or fish oils) For brain function, healthy skin, hormone balance, immune function and so much more, make omegas part of your daily regimen. When we are under stress it can cause inflammation, as well as impede our ability to focus and handle mental fatigue. It is easy to add an oil supplement to support our brain into a morning smoothie or on our salad at lunch.

3) B complex. When our bodies are under stress, it immediately pulls from your body’s supply of B vitamins for energy and adrenal support to sustain your physical and mental energy throughout the day. (B12 fans: try a B-complex for more comprehensive energy support for those hectic days.)

4) Probiotics. Chronic stress can suppress your immune system leaving us vulnerable to every little bug that the kids come in contact with. Probiotics are an easy way to boost our immune systems and make sure that we are absorbing all the nutrients we are taking in. This assures we are in the best condition to fight off infection and viruses.

5) Calcium. No matter your age - be it childbearing years to post-menopausal stage of life - calcium is vital to the maintenance of strong, healthy bones (added benefits include healthy, hair, skin and nails).

5 reasons you need it in your diet

Black Seed: An ancient panacea known as “the cure to everything but death”. Learn why everyone from Hippocrates (the father of modern medicine) to King Tut revered black seed oil for its amazing healthful properties!

Many natural remedies have been used for thousands of years that have been largely forgotten in modern times. As we try to improve our health by lessening our reliance on synthetic drugs and chemicals, many of the ancient remedies are making a comeback. Black seed oil (Nigella Sativa) is one such remedy that is surging in popularity. Here we summarize a few of the most exciting benefits of black seed oil —

1. Asthma: Thymoquinone, an active phytochemical in Black seed oil was shown to work as well as some anti-asthmatic medications in an animal model of asthma.

2. Diabetes: Two grams of black seed a day resulted in reduced fasting glucose, decreased insulin resistance, increased beta-cell function, and reduced A1C.

3. Infection: Black seed oil has been studied for use against many diverse pathogens ranging from H.pylori, ringworms, yeasts, and toxic molds to MRSA.

4. Detox: Black seed was shown to protect the liver and kidneys from pharmaceuticals like antibiotics and environmental toxins such as exhaust and lead exposure.

5. Cancer: Rich in unique phytochemicals and antioxidants black seed has been investigated with favorable results for many types of cancers.

With well over 600 peer-reviewed articles written about black seed oil, one thing remains clear: there is hardly an ailment that does not benefit from taking black seed oil. With its rich history of use and long list of benefits verified by modern science, we cannot think of one reason why not everyone on the planet should have black seed oil as part of their healthful regimen.
